Only 41 percent of Americans attend church services on a typical weekend, according to The Barna Research Group. Each new generation becomes increasingly unchurched. Slightly over one half (51 percent) of the Builder generation, born before 1946, attends church on a typical weekend.
But only 41 percent of boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, and 34 percent of the busters, born 1965 to 1976, attend church regularly.
Dr. Thom Rainer examined the Bridger generation - those born between 1965 and 1976 - and found only 4 percent understand the gospel and have accepted Christ, regardless of whether they attend church.
Of the entire Bridger generation, less than 30 percent attend church. Rainer suggests America is clearly becoming less Christian, less evangelized and less churched. Too many people in churches are oblivious to this reality, he concludes, concerned instead with the status quo for comfort's sake.
