• Technology is great, but people are more important than ever

During the development of RightPath Resources®, we had the opportunity to meet with many senior corporate and human resource leaders. In our discussions, several observations have become clear. First of all, it is now obvious that we are more and more a service economy, and that will mean that the people delivering the services hold the key to company's success. The more that people enjoy their work and take ownership for it, the more likely they will be to provide and create high quality service to "their" customers.

A second observation is that as we implement technology, people are becoming more, not less, important to success. It is true that technology typically enables us to use fewer people in each process; however, this means that each person must be capable of operating more independently in order to gain full benefit of the technology.

Companies will need to recruit, train, and retain people whose talents and potential are closely matched to their work. Think of a person's potential for a particular career field on a scale of 1-10. Hiring a person whose natural talent and motivation match starts at a 5, gives him or her the potential to go to a 10. Those who are not matched to their work will start at a 1 or 2 and will do well to make it to the average (5) level. Working at the 5 level is not going to keep the individual or the company competitive in the workplace of the future and insures a company's mediocrity.

The impact of a shorter business cycle also demands better hiring and retention. Technology has fueled greater world economic competition than has ever existed before. Entrepreneurism is growing rapidly. At the same time, changes in society and government policy can quickly have a dramatic effect on company profits and entire industries. With profit margins always under attack, there must be a return from your investment in every employee.

In the workplace of the 21st century, companies will need problem solvers and a steady flow of creative ideas to stay competitive. Where do you get those problem solvers and creative people that are going to control the destiny of your organization? Usually they must come from within, and in good companies they come at every level. So as you are hiring, you are sewing the seeds that will determine your economic prosperity. As you implement plans and policies to retain good people, you reap a harvest of productive people who care about "their" customers and "their" company. Most will become problem solvers, and some will provide the creative ideas for keeping you on the cutting edge.

The bottom line is that the success of your company will in many ways depend on the way you hire, develop, and retain good employees. Getting the right people in the right positions is step one. Done correctly, people will be in a job where they can quickly become contributing members of the team. The better the match, the quicker they can be trained, the faster they will be productive, and the longer they will stay. Just as important, they will be less likely to be problem employees who consume time, resources, and energy from the organization. Their talents will match their work creating the opportunity to grow personally and professionally - which is what most people desire.
